Biography | Bai Yao

Bai Yao is a contemporary artist whose practice represents a profound dialogue between the tangible and the ethereal. Graduating with a Master’s degree in Sculpture from the renowned Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in 2012, Bai Yao has undergone a fascinating creative migration—moving from the structural rigidity of sculpture to the fluid, meditative world of ink on paper. This sculptural background grants him a unique "three-dimensional" sensitivity, allowing him to construct deep, atmospheric worlds within the flatness of Xuan paper.

Artistic Philosophy: An Aesthetics of "Becoming"

Rooted in Eastern contemplative traditions, Bai Yao views water as the flow of thought and paper as the soil of awakening. In his process, he intentionally relinquishes absolute control, opting instead to guide and respond to the natural movement of the medium. As pigments saturate and permeate the paper, they form "geographies" that seem to emerge from the passage of time itself—valleys of shadows and mists of light.

For Bai Yao, the act of painting is not a depiction of visible landscapes, but an inquiry into the state of "becoming." The uncertain transparency and layering of his work capture the circulation of Qi (vital energy). What remains on the paper is more than colour; it is the sedimented memory of the brush and the very breath of the artist’s inner sanctuary.

Global Recognition & Exhibitions

Bai Yao’s artistic footprint spans the globe, with exhibitions in France, the USA, Italy, the UK, and Singapore. His work has been showcased at the Salon du Dessin in Paris (2023) and the Versailles Contemporary Art Exhibition (2025). Highly regarded in the academic sphere, he has participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in China and received international accolades, including the British Ecological Design Award, reflecting the profound environmental and humanistic resonance within his art.
