Inspired by the 21st hexagram of the I-Ching, "Shi He" (Biting Through), this masterful work explores the imposition of discipline, law, and the birth of societal order.
The term "Shi He" literally translates to the forceful biting together of the jaws. In this visceral composition, a flame-red tiger—the ultimate symbol of kingship and power in Chinese culture—pounces from the darkness to "bite through" and subdue a bolt of erratic lightning.
A key iconographic detail is the tiger's "Double Pupils" (Chong Tong), a historical mark of a legendary ruler or sage, representing extraordinary vision and divine authority. Liang Jiamin posits that for order to prevail over chaos, there must exist a force of immense magnitude. The lightning, representing raw and uncontrollable energy, is here conquered by the tiger’s jaw, signaling the moment where discipline tames volatility to create law.
The interplay of Gold Leaf, rich mineral pigments, and deep Sumi ink on traditional Kumohada-mashi paper creates a regal yet intimidating atmosphere. This piece is a profound meditation on the necessity of strength in the pursuit of justice and the enduring power of structured order.
